Medicine vs AI vs Law: Which Is Right for You? (Summer 2026)

Choosing what to study can feel like a big decision—especially when your school doesn’t offer subjects like Medicine, Artificial Intelligence, or Law. You might be curious about all three but unsure what they actually involve, or what kind of thinker thrives in each area. A summer school gives you the chance to test-drive these subjects for real, so you can make confident choices instead of guessing.

Summer 2026 could be your opportunity to step into something new, explore your strengths, and discover what excites you. Below is a simple guide to help you compare Medicine, AI, and Law and decide which path you want to experience first.

        Why Try Medicine This Summer?

Medicine is rooted in people: understanding how the body works, why illness happens, and how communication, science, and care come together. You don’t need to be top of your class in biology to explore it—curiosity and empathy matter far more at this early stage. A medical summer programme gives you a first look at clinical thinking, teamwork, and what it feels like to learn in a healthcare environment.

Good for you if: you care about others, enjoy biology or health topics, and want a career with real human impact.

        Why Try Artificial Intelligence?

AI is the fastest-growing field of our time. From apps and robots to climate science and gaming, AI is transforming how we live and solve problems. A summer AI programme gives you a beginner-friendly introduction to how machines learn, why data matters, and how technology can shape the future even if you have never written a line of code.

Good for you if: you enjoy patterns, puzzles, problem-solving, or imagining new possibilities.

        Where Medicine and AI Overlap

Here’s something many students don’t realise: Medicine and AI are increasingly becoming one team. AI now helps doctors read scans, diagnose faster, and personalise treatments, while humans provide judgement, empathy, and ethical decision-making. If you’re torn between science and technology, you don’t have to choose one forever—modern healthcare needs both. Exploring either (or both) at summer school can open doors to one of the most exciting frontiers of the next decade.

        Why Try Law?

Law is about how societies decide what’s fair, what’s allowed, and how conflicts are resolved. You don’t need legal knowledge to begin—just curiosity, confidence in discussion, and a willingness to think. A summer Law programme lets you debate, analyse real cases, and build persuasive arguments in a supportive, academic setting.

Good for you if: you enjoy discussion, care about fairness, and want to influence people and ideas.

        Where AI and Law Overlap

AI and Law meet wherever technology needs rules and wherever legal work involves massive amounts of data. Lawyers shape how AI is allowed to operate, and AI helps lawyers work faster, smarter, and more fairly.

The course will begin by introducing students to the approaches and techniques required to carry out a successful Artificial Intelligence research project. At the same time, the instructor will propose a range of topics students might wish to concentrate on. Students will finalize their choices – in concertation with the instructor – at the end of the first week, after which the instructor will provide them with the materials required to carry out their research. The students will work on their projects, under their supervisors, during morning class time and, as the program progresses, several afternoons will also be set aside to enable them to complete their projects. The results will be presented, conference-style, to the team. Research projects might include building an AI chatbot, designing to compensate for bias, designing AI to make it accessible. Alternatively, they might consider papers on issues such as why AI is considered biased, or can machines make art, or why Is AI better at diagnosing disease than doctors? Naturally, wherever possible, our supervisors will do their best to accommodate specific interests.

In Alan Turing’s alma mater, students address what will surely be one of the most dramatic features of 21st century life. The course sets out to define AI while uncovering its history – including the role Cambridge visionaries played in its development. Alongside, students are introduced to its current uses and potential: in robotics, naturally, but in almost every other facet of life and government. They discover how designers and programmers bring, or are seeking to bring, AI into play, while creating their own algorithms to solve different problems. Part of the course is devoted to addressing the ethics surrounding AI and the threat to rights inherent in overreliance on machines.
