Finding your academic voice isn’t about sounding clever or racing ahead academically — it’s about developing habits of thought that value curiosity, independence, and confidence in expressing ideas. These habits rarely appear overnight at 17 or 18. They begin much earlier, often when students are first encouraged to ask why, articulate their thinking aloud, and engage with ideas rather than simply absorb information. For teenagers, this stage is crucial: it’s when attitudes to learning either narrow into exam survival or open out into genuine academic engagement and self-expression.
Well-designed summer schools play a powerful role in helping students find their academic voice. Away from the pressures of term-time grades and familiar classrooms, teenagers are given the space to explore ideas in depth, test their thinking aloud, and engage in genuine academic discussion.
Through small-group teaching, discussion-led sessions, and close interaction with expert tutors, students learn not just to think, but how to express, refine, and defend their ideas — mirroring the academic culture found at Oxford and Cambridge.
Over time, these experiences help students develop a voice that feels both confident and considered. As they grow more comfortable articulating ideas, responding to challenge, and engaging thoughtfully with complex material, academic conversation becomes a skill rather than a source of anxiety. For teenagers considering highly selective universities, summer schools aren’t about fast-tracking success — they’re about building the confidence, clarity, and independence of thought that top universities recognise, value, and actively seek.
Crucially, it is not the specific subject studied that matters most at this stage, but the opportunities students are given to speak, question, and explore ideas in a supportive academic setting. The right courses act as a framework for developing these skills, helping students practise finding their voice long before they are expected to use it in interviews, seminars, or tutorials.
At this age, confidence grows when students realise that contributing ideas is part of learning, not a test of ability. Courses should feel supportive, discussion-led, and exploratory.

The course will begin by introducing students to the approaches and techniques required to carry out a successful Business or Finance-related research project. At the same time, the instructor will propose a range of topics students might wish to concentrate on. Students will finalize their choices – in concertation with the instructor – at the end of the first week, after which the instructor will provide them with the materials required to carry out their research. The students will work on their projects, under their supervisors, during morning class and, as the program progresses, several afternoons will also be set aside to enable them to complete their projects. The results will be presented, conference-style, to the team. Options might include topics such as a comprehensive, professional, business proposal, a research paper into topics such as how realistic crypto and its imitators are as replacement global currencies, the consequences, for the US and the world, of de-dollarization, or whether governments should always endeavor to fight inflation. Naturally, wherever possible, our supervisors will do their best to accommodate specific interests.
